The chevrotain, or mouse deer, of which there are several species living in Africa and Asia, is the world’s smallest hoofed mammal. It is not a true deer; in fact, scientists believe that the chevrotain’s nearest animal kin is the:
A) Camel ü B) Hippopotamus C) Tapir D) Wart hog
The tiny chevrotain is a member of the mammalian order of “even-toed hoofed mammals”. Unlike true deer it lacks horns or antlers, and has upper canine teeth that have developed into small tusks. Like the camel, the chevrotain has a three-chambered stomach, whereas both pigs and hippopotamuses have two-chambered stomachs. Tapirs belong to a different order altogether, the “odd-toed hoofed mammals”.
