5. Ambient music

“If you lean your head out far enough from Desolation Row”, what musical instrument can you hear playing?

A) The Arabian drums
B) The electric violin
C) The pennywhistle ü
D) The tambourine

Musical instruments turn up quite often in Dylan songs, such as the tambourine from “Mr. Tambourine Man” and the Arabian drums from “Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands”. In “Desolation Row”, from Highway 61 Revisited, the electric violin is noted as an instrument that Einstein used to play, but it’s the pennywhistle you hear when you lean your head out — or rather an entire chorus of pennywhistles: the performers are Dr. Filth, his nurse, and “all his sexless patients”.
