The moloch, also known as the “thorny devil”, is a smallish lizard compared to some other Australian species, attaining a maximum size of only about 15 cm (6 in.), but its monstrous appearance makes it a favorite of wildlife photographers. Despite the impressive array of hard spikes that bristle from everywhere on its body, the moloch actually lives a quiet life. The only other such strikingly spiny lizard, the North American horned lizard, is not a near relative of the moloch, but both have adapted to similar desert surroundings, their subsistence based on a diet of ants.
