What is a yaffle?

The yaffle’s name is supposed to recall its laughing cry. Its scientific name is Picus viridus. According to the 1913 edition of Webster’s Dictionary it is also known by the following other names: eccle, hewhole, highhoe, laughing bird, popinjay, rain bird, yaffil, yaffler, yaffingale, yappingale, yackel and woodhack.
