5. The mastoid process

What is the mastoid process?

A) A bone in one’s head ü
B) A mathematical approach to minimizing uncertainty
C) A ship-building technique
D) A summons to a military tribunal

The mastoid process is the bony projection from the skull situated just behind and below the ear. It contains air cells that presumably play a role in hearing, although exactly what role is unclear. Individual mammalian species have characteristic mastoid sizes and shapes, making the bone particularly useful in fossil studies.
