A Jenny Haniver is the supposed dead body of a monstrous creature, actually made from the corpses of skates, rays and certain other fish, or more generally from whatever dead creatures are at hand. Starting in the reign of Emperor Claudius (AD 41-54), the body of a centaur could be viewed in Rome. The strange creature, somewhat smaller than the usual centaurs of myth, was preserved in a vat of honey. The “Centaur of Saune”, as it was known, was presumably an early Jenny Haniver.
