The Village Halloween Parade in New York City’s Greenwich Village is world-famous for its pageantry, its dazzling costumes and performances, its enthusiastic community support, and its sheer stupendous scale, with fifty thousand performers, two million spectators at hand and one hundred million more watching the global TV coverage. The parade was originated in 1973 by a:
A) Children’s puppeteer ü B) Crusading school principal C) Doctor with a passion for marching bands D) Drama club for New York police officers
Ralph Lee was a Greenwich Village puppeteer and mask-maker who started the parade as a traveling puppet show to help promote safe Halloween fun for the children in his community. The event grew rapidly, and since 1981 it has been directed by New York artist Jeanne Fleming. In 1994, the Mayor of New York issued a proclamation declaring the parade to be “a true cultural treasure.”
