8. What is it?

The first Olympic Games to be held in Asia took place in Tokyo in 1964. Japan spent billions of dollars to ensure that everything would go smoothly. The “yamashita”, named for Japanese athlete Haruhiro Yamashita, was popularized at these Games. It is:

A) A silk robe
B) A judo throw
C) A high-protein drink
D) A gymnastics maneuver ü

The “yamashita” is a type of handspring that Yamashita used in winning the gold medal in the Long Horse Vault event. Japan did very well in men’s gymnastics that year, winning five gold medals. These were the first Olympic Games to use computers to keep results, and the first to be televised in color.
