This rollicking British comedy was based on The History of Tom Jones, a famous British novel. Who was its author?
A) Daniel Defoe B) Henry Fielding ü C) Laurence Sterne D) Tobias Smollett
Fielding’s novel of 1754 was an enduring hit, and so it was with this beautifully-shot film adaptation starring Albert Finney as the title character. Tom Jones, a foundling baby, is raised by the kind-hearted Squire Allworthy, but his idyllic youth — and his love for the sweet but socially unattainable Sophie Western (Susannah York) — is interrupted by the machinations of Allworthy’s wicked nephew. Tom is cast loose on the countryside for a series of picaresque adventures — romantic dalliances, duels and a close encounter with the gallows — that end as they must with the restoration of his fortunes and the love of his sweetheart. The film took several other major awards, including Best Director (Tony Richardson), Best Adaptation (John Osborne) and Best Musical Score (John Addison).
