8. Annie Hall (1977)

In this tale of “anxious romance”, what is the profession of male protagonist Alvy Singer (Woody Allen)?

A) Author
B) Comedian ü
C) Critic
D) Director

This was Woody Allen’s first attempt at a movie that went beyond being a string of jokes, and remains for some the high point of his career. Partly based on his real-life romance with Diane Keaton, who plays the title character, it portrays two people brought together by mutual attraction and curiosity who find that in the long run these are not enough to sustain their relationship. Several of the supporting actors in Annie Hall went on to have prominent careers, among them Christopher Walken as Annie’s suicidal brother, Jeff Goldblum as a guest at a Hollywood party, and Sigourney Weaver in a non-speaking part (Alvy’s date). Other brief but notable appearances were made by media theorist Marshall McLuhan as himself, and Truman Capote as a Truman Capote lookalike.
