9. Terms of Endearment (1983)

As with so many other box-office hits, this film was followed up years later (1996) by a less successful sequel with some of the original cast. What was its name?

A) Swift is the Heart
B) Terms of Estrangement
C) The Evening Star ü
D) The Loving Breed

This comedy with soap opera elements (or vice versa), based on a novel by Larry McMurtry, was an Oscar runaway for its producer, James L. Brooks, who earned the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards in addition to Best Picture. Shirley MacLaine as Best Actress and Jack Nicholson as Best Supporting Actor were also honored. The plot concerns the broken relationship between mother Aurora Greenway (MacLaine) and daughter Emma (Debra Winger), the romantic entanglements of both, and their ultimate reconciliation under tragic circumstances. Much of the comedy emerges from the interplay between Aurora and her neighbor, playboy ex-astronaut Garrett Breedlove (Nicholson), as they warily embark on an affair.
