2. Skull and crossbones

Skull and crossbones

The “skull and crossbones” flag was often used by pirates in real life, and nearly always used by pirates in fiction. What was the flag’s special nickname?

A) Black Peter
B) Davy Jones’ kerchief
C) Jolly Roger ü
D) Lord Black

Some pirates of the 16th century announced themselves to their victims by hoisting a plain blood-red flag. It has been speculated that a French term for this flag — the joli rouge or “pretty red” — gradually became “Jolly Roger”. There are competing explanations, however: for instance, some say that “Roger” refers to the devil.
