Davy Jones was a sailor’s name for the malevolent spirit of the deep, and his locker was the graveyard of drowned mariners at the bottom of the sea. Forcing someone to “walk the plank” was referred to as sending them to Davy Jones’ locker. Incidentally, although walking the plank is a staple of pirate fiction, it was rarely carried out in fact.
