One of the most famous of the Caribbean buccaneers was Henry Morgan. After years of swashbuckling on both sides of the law, what was Morgan’s occupation in middle age?
A) Deputy governor of Jamaica ü B) Military adviser to merchant shippers C) Popular public lecturer D) Rum merchant
The Welsh-born Morgan lived a full, adventurous life, much of it spent leading a loosely-organized fleet of Caribbean buccaneers in raids against Spanish coastal towns and shipping. The British government unofficially supported Morgan’s activities, but eventually were obliged to place him under arrest for plundering the Spanish city of Panama during peacetime. After war broke out again in 1674, the king gave Morgan a knighthood and appointed him deputy governor of Jamaica. There he lived out his remaining years as a pillar of society.
