Which of the following ingredients was not a component of the original Waldorf salad?
A) Chopped celery B) Cubed apples C) Mayonnaise D) Walnuts ü
The Waldorf was invented in 1893 by Oscar Tschirky, a Swiss maitre d’hotel at the Waldorf in New York. The original salad had just three ingredients: cubed apples, chopped celery and mayonnaise. Walnuts were a later addition to the recipe, along with raisins or grapes. The salad figured prominently in one episode of the classic British comedy series Fawlty Towers. Hotelier Basil Fawlty tries to explain his inability to produce a Waldorf salad for a guest on the grounds that he is "out of Waldorfs".
