9. Caesar salad source city

Where did the Caesar salad originate?

A) Naples, Italy
B) New York City, USA
C) Tijuana, Mexico ü
D) Toronto, Canada

Many people assume Caesar salad was named for the Roman emperor Julius Caesar. Not so — the salad was named for Caesar Cardini, an Italian restaurateur living in Mexico. He invented the salad in 1924, when so many prohibition-fleeing Americans arrived at his restaurant that he ran out of vegetables. Cardini made a ceremony of preparing the salad at the table, and it looked so delicious everybody wanted one. If you prefer your Caesar without anchovies, you are on the same side as Cardini himself, who felt that the Worcestershire sauce in the dressing provided enough fishy flavor.
