What was the trade of John Shakespeare, William’s father?
A) Actor B) Butcher C) Glover ü D) Notary
Originally a farmer’s son, John Shakespeare was successful enough as a maker and seller of gloves that he became a leading citizen of Stratford, the family’s home town. Between 1558 and 1577 he held a succession of civic posts, including alderman and bailiff. His position as a community leader then seems to have evaporated rather suddenly and mysteriously, and the remainder of his life seems to have been attended by financial and perhaps other personal difficulties.
