7. Celebrating a pioneer

In 1932, Carlton Cole Magee of the United States invented what was to become a familiar emblem of modern civilization. What was it?

A) The neon sign
B) The parking meter ü
C) The pay toilet
D) The roll-on deodorant

The brand-new problem of motorized traffic congestion inspired Magee to develop a practical system for managing the rental of municipal parking space. Not everyone was immediately sure that parking meters were a blessing upon humanity. In fact, their introduction was marred in some places by vigilantes who carried out organized campaigns of meter-destruction.
