Clotho spins the thread of life; Lachesis casts lots as to its length; and Atropos cuts it at the indicated point, bringing death. Atropos is the eldest; her name (meaning “the unalterable” or “the inflexible”) gives us the word atropine, the toxic substance in the plant deadly nightshade.
