The scion of a noble Russian family, Dr. Alexander Alekhine was one of the most colorful characters in the history of chess. He became champion in 1927 by beating José Capablanca, the Cuban prodigy who had achieved the championship in 1921 despite never having formally studied chess openings or tactics. The Russian Mikhail Tal won the title in 1960 to become, at 23, the youngest chess champion in history.
