10. Torino

The city of Torino, or Turin, is the site of the 2006 Winter Olympics. Turin has many other claims to fame, including its chocolate, its architecture, its Fiat plant, and all but one of the following. Which?

A) Destroyed by an arch-enemy of ancient Rome
B) First growing place of the distinctive uva blu wine ü
C) Home of a celebrated and controversial religious relic
D) Home town of a powerful Indian political leader

Turin, which belongs to the Piedmont region in Italy’s northwest, lies across the Alps from southeastern France. It was laid waste by Hannibal in 221 BC as he descended from the mountains to attack Rome. The famed Shroud of Turin, supposed by some to be the burial cloth of Christ, is housed by the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in the city. And Turin native Sonia Gandhi (born Sonia Maino) married Rajiv Gandhi, who became prime minister of India in 1984. She took over the reins of India’s powerful Congress party in 1998, nearly a decade after her husband’s assassination.
