The Straits of Magellan separate South America from Tierra del Fuego, at the boundary of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They belong to Chile, and are named for Ferdinand Magellan, who led the first European expedition through the Straits in 1520. Magellan’s fleet took 38 days to transit the Straits; in 2004, a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier did it in just two days. Other wildlife you might see in the Straits of Magellan include the fur seals, dolphins, cormorants, Magellanic Penguins and one of the world’s rarest birds of prey, the Striated Caracara.
