Europe and Asia are usually regarded as separate continents, despite forming a single landmass. Under this view, the world is divided into seven continents. When listed in order from largest to smallest, the first four are Asia, Africa, North America and South America. Which of the following correctly completes the list?
A) Antarctica, Europe, Oceania/Australia ü B) Antarctica, Oceania/Australia, Europe C) Europe, Antarctica, Oceania/Australia D) Europe, Oceania/Australia, Antarctica
The smallest continent, which combines the islands of Oceania and Australia, is a little over 8 million sq km. The next largest is Europe. Geographers divide Europe from Asia at the Ural Mountains, the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Turkey is on both continents, with the dividing line being the Bosphorus Strait. By this reckoning, Europe then covers nearly 10 million sq. km (4 million sq. mi.), making it only about three-quarters the size of Antarctica.
